Sephora Play Box Review – June 2017

One of my favorite days each month comes somewhere in between the 15th and the 20th. That’s because that is when I receive my monthly Playbox from Sephora! This is why it’s important to fill out your profile! As soon as you sign up they will email you a link to fill out your profile.

What is a Sephora Play Box, you ask?

Play! by Sephora is a monthly subscription box containing 5 samples of high-end beauty products chosen by the Sephora staff. The products consist of makeup, skincare, hair care, and fragrance samples. These samples can be worth as much as $65 depending on the month. For $10 that’s a great deal!

There is a new theme each month that the products are geared towards. This month’s theme is “Summer Starters”. The subscription-only costs $10 a month with no additional shipping charge. The box also contains a cute, reusable makeup bag and a “Play” book of that month’s product description and a few beauty tips!

I absolutely love this brilliant subscription! I’m a makeup and skincare addict for sure and I want it all. The Play boxes provide an affordable way to try out a lot of different products without blowing your entire paycheck. I have also discovered a few new products I wouldn’t have previously noticed or purchased. The samples are actually a pretty decent size so you get quite a few uses out of them as long as you are a little conservative about it!

What is in the June 2017 Play Box?

Keep in mind that they choose which products they think are best for you, based on the answers you provide in your PLAY! PROFILE. So, your June Play Box might be different than mine.

Benefit Cosmetics The POREfessional Face Primer

Description from the Play! Book: “Silky, lightweight face primer minimizes pores and smoothes skin for a flawless, soft-focus finish.”

My two cents: The primer really is lightweight, silky soft, and does actually help to minimize the appearance of pores. My heavier foundation slipped around a bit on top of this primer so I think it’s best suited for lighter foundation formulas, which a lot of us prefer on hot summer days anyway. I also noticed that my makeup still looked pretty good after a sweat session at the gym so that’s a major plus!

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lovesick

Description from the Play! Book: “Long-lasting, high-pigment liquid lipstick with a creamy formula glides on smoothly like gloss but leaves a matte finish”.

My two cents: It took me a while to hop onto the matte lipstick bandwagon, but this lipstick finally got me hooked. It looks flawless and lasts forever! It dries quickly and can be hard to fix smudges. I’m a perfectionist and can’t stand for lipstick not to be applied perfectly so I recommend using a liner before applying.

Coola Makeup Setting Spray SPF 30

Description from the Play! Book: “Weightless do-it-all setting most keeps makeup looking fresh, reduces the appearance of pores, and provides SPF 30 sun protection”.

My two cents: Genius. I wish I had thought of this. I’m terrified of the sun and aging so, for me, sun protection is a must. I think it does a decent job of setting your makeup. There is alcohol in it, which is probably what helps minimize pore appearance, so it does burn a little bit quickly subsides.

Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk

Description from the Play! Book: “Cult-favorite dry shampoo make with oat milk absorbs excess oil and adds volume for soft, refreshed hair”.

My two cents: First of all… who knew that you could get milk from oats? I sure didn’t. I like this dry shampoo a lot. It doesn’t leave your hair with that sticky feeling that some of the others do. You just spray, shake your hair out, and go.

Verb Sea Spray

Description from the Play! Book: “This sea salt-infused hair mist contains seaweed and kelp extract to add texture and volume for loose waves”.

My two cents: This spray says that you can use on dry or damp hair. My hair is a bit wavy and can sometimes frizz so I would have to say that using this on my dry hair, even if it’s already a little wavy, is a no go. But the results are beautiful when I use it while my hair is still damp before blow drying a little. Great for beach summer hair!

Versace Bright Crystal Perfume

Description from the Play! Book: “A fresh, floral fragrance featuring a sparkling blend of yuzu, magnolia, and lotus plus a hint of musk and amber”.

My two cents: I’m not sure what yuzu is but by golly it must smell good! The scent is light and refreshing which makes it a great summer perfume!

That’s it for this month’s Play Box. Have fun playing!

Next month:

From this point forward this is Meagan writing. Mikka basically sold me on trying out this Sephora subscription and since then I’ve gotten 3 boxes.

Sephora Playbox August 2019

Sephora Playbox August 2019
Sephora Playbox August 2019

The August Playbox had some really great stuff in it.

My favorite was the Farmacy Green Clean Makeup Meltaway Cleansing Balm – Natural Makeup Remover, it takes off eye makeup really well and it’s not a liquid remover which makes it easier to travel with.

My second fav was the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. It felt good and it smelled great.

We loved our September box. In fact, we liked it so much I’ve ordered several full-size items that we first tried from the Playbox.

Eden has really bad eczema and the Clinique Moisture Surge 72-Hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator is by far the best face lotion we have found for her. If you’ve got a teen with eczema I highly recommend giving this a shot.

In my opinion, the Glamglow Supertoner Exfoliating Acid Solution smells like licorice. As long as that is not an issue for you this is an amazing toner. The smell doesn’t bother me at all and to be honest, I like the smell. In a weird way, it helps me wake up in the morning. I already had a toner I felt like I was sold on for life but after trying this one I switched.

We love our Sephora subscription. I like getting samples this size because they are great to travel with and she’s always off traveling somewhere in the world. I recommend saving your travel-sized samples for your next trip.

Have you tried Play! by Sephora? What did you think? What was your favorite product?

Other Types of Subscriptions

Have you tried a different type of subscription boxes for women? My sister has a clothing box subscription to Stitch Fix and she did a clothing subscription review on it and she’s also done meal kit boxes. She uses Sun Basket and seems obsessed. Here’s a $35 off Sun Basket coupon and her Sun Basket review:
