Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is even better than the first volume. We couldn’t wait to see the new Guardians of the Galaxy, (this is Noah’s favorite movie) but had feared this one would not be as good. The good news is that there was no reason for worry, because it was awesome. Volume 2 continues the same action packed, humorous, over the top space adventures of Peter Quill aka Star-Lord and his friends. The movie kicks off with them doing mercenary work in the wake of the popularity and fame they garnered from saving Xandar. The same fame that has helped Peter’s dad track him down. While attempting to get themselves out of a jam Peter’s dad intervenes and the story begins to get deeper, as no one knows how he found them or if he is a good guy or a bad guy.

New Characters

Mantis along with Peter’s father, names Ego, is introduced in this film.  Mantis, an empath, makes a great addition. The back and forth between her awkwardness and Drax’s bluntness is hysterical.  All throughout the movie the comedy is brilliantly weaved into the superhero thing. Which is impressive considering how tragic the story ultimately ends up being.

Ego is Peter’s unknown father that seems like a dream come true, but it isn’t long before that dream is an utter nightmare. Peter’s story of losing his mother as a child was already a tragic story and somehow they were able to make his story even more gut wrenching. You know a villain is truly evil when Yondu starts looking better. I should probably mention that Ego is played by Kurt Russell!

Nebula, Gamora’s sister, is also in this film. Although she is not a brand new character she has a much greater role. Her being in so much of the film gives insight into what a sick and twisted background Gamora came out of. Plus, you just never know which side of things Nebula is really for. She keeps you guessing. It will be interesting to see if Nebula makes an appearance in the next volume or not. It was certainly not clear from this one if she would be in a future movie.

Another character that we learn way more about is Yondu. For whatever reason I did not expect him to be in this one, so you can imagine my surprise when I realize he has a major role it it. By the time this movie is over everything you think you know about Yondu will be gone and you will be left with an entirely different perspective on him.

Sylverster Stallone even shows up as Stakar. His part is minor and kind of random, but also it’s kind of awesome. I grew up watching him so I think he’s a great addition to the movie. He seems to be the head ravager.

Individual Screen Time

One nice thing was seeing some of the characters get some individual screen time. One of the most interesting scenes to me was watching Rocket take out a massive team of people. It was neat to see how smart, skillful, and creative he is.

And of course, everyone enjoys baby Groot running around. Speaking of Groot, what ever you do, do not leave the theater until you see Groot the teenager. Groot the baby is fine, but Groot the teenager is awesome. My kids missed this and it was my favorite thing. It is during the credits.

Guardians Of the Galaxy Vol 2 was so good. I highly recommend taking your kids to see it. There were a few bad words in it, but it was pretty minor.
